Dialogue with Guo Gu and Chozen and Hogen Bays Roshi at the Center

April 18 – April 19, 2022

The Tallahassee Chan Center sangha and Guo Gu were recently honored with a visit from Chozen Bays Roshi and Hogen Bays Roshi, Zen priests and abbots from the Great Vow Monastery in Portland, Oregon. Chozen, Hogen, and Guo Gu shared their dharma together on two evenings. Chozen and Hogen shared their history with Zen in the West beginning in the 1960’s to present. Other teachings included the value of virtue and kindness in all actions. Chozen shared some conditions conducive to unhealthy boundaries between teachers and students and a Healthy Boundaries Training for Buddhist Leaders inspired by the FaithTrust Institute. Chozen also shared that the “inner critic” within us was developed when we were young, scared, and vulnerable; she and other teachers discussed some advice on ways to transform the inner critic. The Tallahassee Chan Center and Guo Gu are very grateful for Chozen and Hogen’s teachings!
