Refugee Support at the Tallahassee Chan Center

The Tallahassee Chan Center began refugee support work in early 2022, when over 150 Afghan evacuees arrived in Tallahassee following the fall of Kabul. With local agencies overwhelmed, TCC stepped in to support several families with immediate essentials and continued care for those still rebuilding their lives here.

Who We Support

We currently assist three refugee families, most with young children. Their needs range from language learning and
school support to transportation, housing stability, and navigating essential services.

How We Support Families

1. Essential Needs

  • School materials and seasonal necessities

2. Appointments & Logistics

  • Transportation to medical and dental appointments
  • Help scheduling and managing paperwork
  • Support navigating benefits and services

3. Education

  • English tutoring for adults (in-person or Zoom)
  • Homework and reading support for children
  • ESL class registrations and follow-up

4. Social Support

  • Childcare during ESL classes
  • Trips to parks, libraries, and community spaces
  • Orientation to Tallahassee stores, bus routes, and essentials

5. Long-Term Stability

  • Guidance during major immigration steps
  • Help with job searches and workplace communication
  • Coordination with the IRC and local volunteer networks

Why This Work Matters

Refugee families arrive with almost nothing, often after trauma and displacement. Local systems—transportation, healthcare, and schools—are difficult to navigate even for native English speakers. Consistent, stable support dramatically increases their ability to gain footing and move toward independence.
